Exercise 3 Visual conventions for time and place

I started with an article by Eric Shanower which I found when I put a keyword "graphic novel" in Tate web site. There is Eric's great notion what we can imagine when we are talking about storytelling, about graphic novel. The beginning of the article moved me to the Egyptian paintings.

Battle of nubia

The paintings were flat, the figures were drawn from profile point of view. The perspective is not there it is really 2D without any sign from which part - space it is. The time is represented by the tools and guns we can see in the paitings.

These paintings are great memory which tells us very old stories. We can find out how man lived and what they did.

As I am interested in human masks and how they change the perception of person, the knitted masks are very interesting, I would make some if I find a time :-)



When I saw that example I was thinking what it represents. Is that somebody wanted to hide, change skin, display his feelings, play a role, overcome shy. I am really fascinated by masks. Can masks allow to us open something magical in us? Can we hide and show what we are? Are our cloths our inner feelings? We know that cloths make man but we do not hide our face. When we look at somebody hide his/her face we feel tension, our brain/senses are restless, we can not read object's mood, the "one still face" has one mood and it is for us strange, uncomfortable etc.



I had no idea how the knitting could be interesting. Instead to use the knitting for practical items I really love to see other kinds examples where knitted things completely changed the space of ordinary things we see every day. The old, dirty and shady things could are changed just to give them a "knitted mask".

This is what I really love - Yard Bombing:

it is amazing how the knitted things change the space. I would like to change a space around my work if it will be possible. I must make a research.





And home, sweet home examples. I really like the tea sweaters and all the examples. My wife knits and I she really like the items too.

And finally my biggest interest in these examples. I must have one piece in my home or to try knit.





I must admit that I am nicely surprised how knitted pattern contributes to make a harmony in space. I completely revalued the knitting and now I see it in other point of vie. Especially Yard bombing is in my focus and I will be thinking how it can help or enhance the space around my house or company space. I think the simple patterns are the most beautiful results, on the other hand it is not bad to wear Christmas sweater only one day in year.
