Vogler's stages of the hero's journey

Christopher Vogler's 'Hero's Journey':
"The Hero's Journey is not an invention, but an observation. It is a recognition of a beautiful design, a set of principles that govern the conduct of life and the world of storytelling" (Vogler, 1999 p. ix)

Act I (Beginning = the hero's decision to act)

1. Ordinary World
2. Call to Adventure
3. Refusal of the Call
4. Meeting with the Mentor
5. Crossing the First Threshold

Act II (Middle = the action)

6. Tests, Allies, Enemies
7. Approach to the Inmost Cave
8. Ordeal
9. Reward

Act III (End = the consequences of action)

10. The Road Back
11. Resurrection
12. Return with Elixir.
